People have orthodontic treatment to improve the appearance, health and function of their teeth. It can also help to maintain the long term health of the teeth, gums and jaw joints.

These days, with good oral hygiene and regular dental care, your teeth should last a lifetime. People are very aware of how teeth look and an attractive smile will play an important role in enhancing your self-confidence. Wouldn’t it be nice if your teeth looked good too? Many people have teeth that are crowded or crooked. Orthodontic treatment can be used to straighten their teeth, which also improves appearance.
 
It is more difficult to clean your teeth when they are crowded and overlapping. Inadequate cleaning is a major factor in tooth decay, gum disease and eventual tooth loss. Having your teeth straightened will make it easier for you to look after them.

When teeth do not meet correctly, clenching and grinding, can create excessive wear and/or uneven wear of the teeth, leading to long term problems.

In cases of severely crowded teeth the gums can be damaged. For example, in cases of deep bite, the lower front teeth can bite directly into the gum behind the upper front teeth.

When the teeth do not meet correctly strain can be placed on the muscles of the jaw and this can lead to jaw and joint problems.  Orthodontic treatment will re-establish a more even bite and reduce strain on the joint.

Some people have difficulty speaking properly because of alignment problems with their teeth and jaws. Orthodontic treatment can sometimes address this problem.

Orthodontic treatment is usually carried out on children, but it is possible for adults to have orthodontic treatment too - an increasing number are already investing in smiling more.  Age is less important than the presence of the proper number of teeth
